Welcome to Our Primary School

The Uganda School for the Deaf is the first school for the Deaf in Uganda. Started in 1959 by

Mrs. Julia Lule with the help of Miss Brown and the support of the Uganda Society for the Deaf on land leased by the Church of Uganda - Namirembe.

It started in a small room at Mengo Primary School, moved to independent premises adjacent to Namirembe Infants School and finally moved into its own current premises at Ntinda in 1987. The School is a Government grant aided Primary School bringing together all Deaf children, Deaf Blind, and those with multiple disabilities. The school moved to its new site at Ntinda, plot 18 Ntinda road, 5Kms  East of  Kampala city in 1987, with the foundation stone laid on 19th July 1974 by the then President of the Republic of  Uganda, General Idi Amin Dada

 

The school's primary aim is to cater for the education, interests and needs of the Deaf children in Uganda and beyond.

Uganda school for the Deaf is a boarding school with an enrolment of over 200 pupils in classes ranging from the Pre - school year, Primary 1 to Primary 7. 

 

The school also runs a sign language day programme, once a week for pre-school deaf children and their parents. 

The school has a multi-disciplinary staff that work as a team to promote the vision and the values of the school.

The school has a School Management Committee and PTA which work together to continuously, uphold the school's mandate of  educating, Teaching, and advocating for the interests and needs of Children with the Hearing Impairment. 

The school has over the years been led by the following Head teachers;

1970 – 1989               Mr. Ivan Matovu (RIP)

1989 – 1992               Mr. Damba (RIP)

1992 – 1992               Mr. Balyejusa (RIP)

1992 – 2000               Mr. Joseph Morrissey (RIP) - First PLE class graduating in 1997.

2000 – 2007               Mr. Jackson Mbusi.

2008 – 2010               Ms. Juliet Mary Tumuhairwe.

2011 – 2019               Mr. Jackson Mbusi.

2020 –  To Date          Ms. Juliet Mary Tumuhairwe.
